I don’t want to seem like I’m too good for the dollar store but, I never liked to shop there.

I’m all for a good bargain, and when you are a mama with six kids, trust me–you need a few bargains in your life.

But I just didn’t grow up shopping there. My mom was of the opinion that anything sold that cheap must be inferior. She was a single mother who supported three kids for many, many years, so I get it. My mom worked hard and she wasn’t going to make us shop at the dollar store. My Nana, on the other hand, loved that place. It was her jam. Still, I grew up associating the dollar store with flat, cheap soda and generic shampoo.

Things are different now. My mama–at the ripe old age of 63 years old–is a devoted dollar store shopper. You should go, she told me one day, they have the best stuff.

So I went. And I was pleasantly surprised. I’ll never look down my nose at the dollar store ever again!

I discovered they carried lots of cool stuff to craft and DIY, which I really like. I was recently strolling through the Halloween aisle for ideas for our family Halloween party. I found a bag of glow in the dark skeletons that I knew I could to do something fun with. Here is a cheap and easy way to make a Halloween-style garland using a dollar store item:

This project isn’t rocket science.

You thread as many skeletons as you want on a string.
You hang them up.
Step back and observe your work.
You are now awesome.

High five.

That’s it.

I used black yarn, but only after I realized I couldn’t really fit my jute twine through the tiny hole of the skeleton. You could also use string or ribbon, but I think you’d have a hard time with the skeletons sliding down into one place. I chose yarn and a good thing with the yarn is it was thick enough for the skeletons to stay in their place.

Remember when you were a kid and your shoelaces got frayed at the end, so you wrapped a piece of tape around it to lace up your shoes? Same concept. Once you wrap the end of your yarn with tape, it makes stringing up your skeletons super easy.

The packages I found came in a bag of eight so I bought three. Twenty-four skeletons was plenty to create a garland over a fireplace mantle, for example. My fireplace is white on white, so the skeletons didn’t stand out like I wanted them to, so I hung the garland outside. And yes, it does glow in the dark!

More garland ideas:

  • Spray paint them a cool color.
  • Glue tiny fabric flowers to give them a cool Dia de los Muertos vibe.
  • Paint a tiny red heart on its chest.
  • Add hook and turn it into an ornament.
  • String them up for your Halloween party decorations.
  • Glue skeletons onto a nicho, or shrine.
