If there is one thing I want to celebrate in the New Year, it’s art.
I love art.
The power an artist has to make you feel something is amazing. That’s what Chicano art does for me — it makes me feel. Whether it be about my culture, my people, my spirituality, my identity as a brown person in this country, it always brings out all the feels.
And that’s how good art should be. If it has no soul, what is the point?
I had the pleasure of visiting the Museum of Latin American Art for their Somewhere Over el Arco Iris: Chicano Landscapes 1971 – 2015 exhibit. It is MOLAA’s first exhibition to present works solely by Southern California-based Chicano artists and it contains work spanning over 40 years and it includes paintings, drawings and mixed media works. It’s been a long time coming!

What I really enjoyed about this exhibit was how varied the content was. That is the beauty of Chicano art. It doesn’t have to be just about the “Chicano” experience, it doesn’t have to be pigeon-holed.
Chicano art is art.

Love this @Pearmama! In 2001 my Spanish teacher took us on a field trip to the Indiana State Museum where Cheech Marin’s collection, Chicano was on exhibit. I LOVED it! It is still my most favorite art exhibit! Thanks for the flashback moment!
