Rastaman Vibration: Happy birthday, Bob Marley

I’ve been resting in bed all day because I feel like poop. Finally, “the sick” made its way into our home. My tea cups, throat spray and booger tissues scattered beside me, I decided to try and make myself better by listening to one of my favorite musicians, one of the greatest that ever lived.

Did you know that music can heal you? It can elevate your mood and make you happy. It can make you want to move your body and dance. It can inspire you to be creative. It can also help you connect to fond memories.

Bob Marley and his music does that for me. In fact, today would’ve been Robert Nesta Marley’s 69th birthday.

I was a child of the 70’s, and I remember my father playing Bob Marley’s music in our home all the time. My Dad had his own art studio (you might also call it a “man cave”) and I have fond memories of floating in and out of his space while he was working. My little brother and I would play outside and I could hear his music. Or I would be inside my bedroom playing dolls and I could hear Bob Marley’s music wafting through our little home in San Diego. I must’ve been around five years old.

The story goes, my Dad had the chance to see Bob Marley in concert in L.A. But Dad passed up on the ticket and lost the chance of ever seeing this Jamaican visionary and shaman play his music because he died from cancer soon after.  I don’t know how true it is, but it makes a pretty good story to tell.

Needless to say, I’ve been a fan of Bob Marley’s music as far back as I have memories. His passionate message never fails to make me feel happy every time I listen to it. I’ve passed this love of reggae down to my kids, too.

This was around 2009.

I watched this concert footage video earlier today. It made me feel better.

Scroll about fifteen minutes in, that’s when the music starts.

I’m ready to go back to bed to rest and I think I’m going to watch Marley on Netflix. Such a beautiful movie about a beautiful soul.

Happy 69th birthday, Bob Marley. One love. Irie!
